This page shows some of the news feed conversion patterns available with the Web Feed Generator. It includes live feeds and others in an HTML demonstration format so they can be displayed in your Web browser.
The Web Feed Generator system was originally developed to produce news feeds for the Code Style site. The site publishes hundreds of answers to Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) in more than 20 categories. It also has a site log, or blog in the jargon, and several Table Of Contents pages that are used to generate news feeds.
Conversion pattern examples
Standard conversion patterns are described below with links to example pages. Metacentric can tailor the conversion pattern used by the Web Feed Generator to the format of your Web pages too.
-
Paragraph links mode
The paragraph links conversion pattern is the most general format used by the Web Feed Generator. This pattern matches hyperlinks in paragraphs and makes a news item from them. Item titles are created from the link text.
-
Fragment mode
When a Web page has a series of fragment anchors to mark major headings, the Web Feed Generator creates a news feed item for each heading and uses the text that follows as the summary text. One common example of this format is a Frequently Asked Questions page, like these examples from the Web Feed Reference section of this site.
-
Table of contents mode
One of the advanced features of the Web Feed Generator is TOC mode, which works with HTML definition lists set out in the form of a table of contents, like the Web Feed Reference index page.
